FAQs

  • A treadle sewing machine is powered entirely by you—no electricity needed! The motion of your feet on the treadle creates the rhythm that drives the needle, letting you control the sewing speed with precision. It’s the perfect tool for intentional, slow sewing.

Most antique treadles sew only straight stitches. I work on two machines: a modern Janome 712T set into an old Singer base, giving me the same foot-powered control people used a century ago, with the convenience of a modern machine. My newest addition is a 90+ year-old industrial high-speed Singer 103K treadle—a beautiful piece of history that’s still going strong.

  • Yes! We’re completely off-grid, meaning we’re not connected to public utilities. We have a small solar array with a battery bank for electricity, a wood stove to heat our home ( propane to heat in the studio), and we haul our water in from a nearby spring.

  • Who is Needle and Axe? Just me! Working out of my off-grid studio, I handle every step—sourcing materials, designing and pattern-making, cutting and sewing, product photography, branding, packing, and shipping.

  • Yes! If something I’ve made fails, I’ll do my best to repair it and get it back in action. Just send me an email or use the contact form so we can make a plan.

Normal wear and tear is part of a gear’s life, taking care of your gear is the best way to make it last. I stand by my workmanship and want your piece to serve you well for years to come.

  • Gear naturally shows some wear and tear over time, but taking good care of it is the best way to make it last. Just follow these simple tips to keep your item looking and working great.

    Waxed Canvas Care

Waxed canvas has long been loved for its durability, natural water resistance, and rugged character. Thanks to its wax coating, the fabric develops a beautiful patina over time—folds, scratches, and scuffs all add to its rich, well-worn look.

    Care tips:

    • To reduce marks or scuffs, gently warm the area with a hair dryer and smooth it out with your hand.

    • Treat waxed canvas like leather—spot clean only, using a soft scrub brush or damp cloth. For stubborn stains, use saddle soap (always test in an inconspicuous spot first). Never use detergent.

    • Over time, the wax coating may wear down. You can easily reapply wax (such as Otter Wax) to restore water resistance and keep your canvas looking its best.

    Zipper Pouch

    Care Tips:

    • Hand wash or spot clean with cold water and mild soap. Do not machine wash.

    • Air dry or line dry only— never put it in the dryer.

    Zipper Care:

    • Be gentle when opening and closing.

    • Avoid overstuffing; if your bag is full, hold both sides close together while zipping.

    • If the slider doesn’t move smoothly, don’t force it— check for anything caught in the teeth.

    • If fabric is caught, gently pull on the fabric (not the zipper) to release it.
